2nd ODI - England v N.Zealand - Southampton

England are 1-0 down, and need to win the last 2 games, to win the series.

Weather looks fine for the week, so, they have no excuses.

Presumably, Broad and Finn will still be missing, and they need Anderson/Swann to play well .. As they have been, to restrict, even a dubious looking N.Zealand batting team.

Think generally, England are a touch over-rated in this form, and N.Zealand have a chance.

N.Zealand win the toss, and decide to bat. Southee is not playing, which is a fairly big loss.

Eng 1.56

N.Zealand 2.76

N.Zealand finish on 359-3 ... Some total, especially at the Ageas Bowl, with a mighty impressive knock from Martin Guptil, of 189 not out.

Eng will have to bat, mightily well ..

At the break, N.Zealand big favs .. 1.16

Eng made a poor effort to get the runs, despite being 50-0, with a decent rate.

Big scores are gettable in the new format, with 2 balls etc, but, they went about it poorly.

Decent 100 from Trott.

N.Zealand win e series .. Last game on Wed, becomes a dead rubber.

2nd ODI - S.Africa v Pakistan - Centurion

This game, highlighted just how important it is, to know the ground.

Weather has been around, but, not for long spells, and despite rain/thunder only being forecast to arrive at about 8pm local, it came far earlier, and disrupted the game for 2.30 hrs.

The Completed Match Market (CMM), saw a lot of activity, and, novices, easily got misled, by .. The amount of rain that fell, and the overhead conditions.

Here are pics, in time order .

Pre-game.

As the rain had hit.

Clearing in the distance .. Yet, you could back game, (Yes), at about 1.6.

Dark clouds to the west .. But, they were .. Probably .. Moving away.

Clean-up started .. Yes, still available at 1.4 or so.

44 over a side game .. No more rain, and, for experienced weather watchers, almost free money.

////////////////////////////

There are a lot of similarities, to the Test in New Zealand. Weather patterns, do tend to repeat.

I am heavily on Mr Draw .. and think, its a racing certainty (currently 1.35, from (madness .. 1.8) or so, at close of play.

Good luck with your positions  ..  and take a brolly.

3rd ODI - S.Africa v N.Zealand - Potchefstrom

Dead rubber ODI, after NZ win the series.

NZ win the toss, on a 250 pitch

SA 1.44. .. On a good looking wkt. No Amla, Steyn rotated for Morkel, Pieterson also out .. For Phangiso.

I like a lay of SA, early on.

NZ finally scrambled to 259, making some nice run lines. It might not be so easy a chase.

(U can definately get under Steyns skin, .. And he doesn't always react well. Today, his 10 overs, went for 56, and didn't seem happy. .. 0 wkts.)

Lopsy got a 4 fer.

Market seems to favour SA, but, if Smith goes early, I could see plenty of panic.

As it happened, Smith gets a good 100, but, the game had plenty of twists, as the SA middle order, seems v inexperienced. (Ingram/Miller/Berhadien/De Kock/Faff) all had questionable dismissals ..

A last ball 6, gets SA home, when they needed 3 to win, 2 to tie. Some of the fielding from NZ was again v good, thou, they did drop one or two.

Nice to see 2 teams, clearly playing flat out, in what, was a dead rubber game.

2nd ODI - S.Africa v N.Zealand - Kimberley

You won't believe this.

Airport is 25 mins away, and I left 100 mins before flight was due to leave, and never even got close. Major accident on the highway, and everything gridlock, whilst the helicopter landed etc.

Re-booked, but, few flights to Kimberley, and will only get there, 90 mins after game has started .. Hope it's not a train .. Not the end of the world, as watched the Tennis, and had a few interests.

S.Africa definitely without De Villiers, and I hear Steyn also rested. Really want to be with N.Zealand, at decent odds. Hope S.Africa bat first..

Also lose Amla .. Quad strain .. Will miss last game, also.

SA win toss and bowl

NZ run line about 230

I have seen some highs scores here, especially in the inaugural IPL. It's a ground you can chase on.
Baking hot .. About 38c.

Ok, that's all folks ...pretty much, live anyway, as the Internet here is v weak, and keeps dropping.

This is my review of the game.

NZ scored a below par 278, which might have been more, but they lost wickets in the chase.

I wouldn't blame them, as much as the local comms .. Which had a right dig, at Mcslogger in particular. I think this is wrong, cos, it's a ground, lots of big chases have been done at, and I never blame a side for being attacking. Particular mention should be made of Kane Williamson, who scored a v decent 145,

SA were absolutely cruising in the chase, but, when Smith was run-out, the inexperienced middle order was exposed, and they allowed the run rate required to creep higher. I think this was a really below par effort by SA .. Sure, some of the NZ fielding was v good .. But, it's such a big ground, 6 an over, with 8 wkts in hand, is v achievable

. SA were 167-1 .. and found a way to lose .. Not encouraging, for the new team.

Anyway, the end result, is SA have lost the last 4 ODI's, and the series to NZ.

The ranking system, had SA as top, but if they lose on Friday, they will slip a long way down .. Shows u how much, the table, values current form.

The final game of the series, in Potchefstrom on Friday, becomes a dead rubber.

ODI - S.Africa v N.Zealand - Paarl

Watched some of the Aus Open Tennis, so, only got 3 hrs sleep. Have to leave for the airport at 5.30am ... Problems .. Car tire flat ... Will be touch and go if I make the flight, ... Expecting drab game, so, an excuse to go back to bed, wouldn't go amiss.

Made the flight .. But got lost going to ground .. Few signs ... iPad maps - what a piece of crap that is, can't locate Boland Park.

Clear day expected .. Hopefully not too hot, as it can be really baking in this part of the world.

S.Africa resort to there one day side, with N.Zealand also looking a slightly stronger outfit.

Hard to see it being a contest thou, and S.Africa solid favourites a 1.22

Well, that was how it normally goes .. But, let me tell you a story.

I am a fond believer in a strong work ethic, which, is sometimes at odds with the life of a trader ... and that chance favours the prepared.

In a different life, I used to trade horses .. Every day, I would get into the motor, and travel 1-2 hrs, just to ern a crust. This was a long time ago, before markets were as efficient as they are today, but, I could usually manage to win, lets say 20x a day, where x is undisclosed.

One day, in a week of bad weather, I had a 3 hr journey, to get to a racetrack. The 1st race was at 12.30, so, it meant leaving, pretty early.

I got up, turned on the radio, and wasn't surprised to discover, their was a track inspection, scheduled for 9.00. This wasn't much good to me, as it's. long jounrney, so, decided to start off, and try and pull over, after an hr.

I did this, only to hear, the 1st inspection was unclear, and a new one was schedule for 10.30. This was a problem. Do I decide to drive on, and probaly waste the petrol / time / effort. After much soul-searching, I did drive on,and got to the track at 12.00, to discover, the good news, the meeting would go ahead.

As I got out the car, I did notice it was very windy, but, gave it little thought, as my mind was on the Cornish pasties, this racetrack excelled at.

Anyway, the meeting went ahead .. And, in the 1st race, prices did not seem accurate. This rarely happens for long .. Efficient markets catch up, but, this day, they stayed in-efficient .. So much so, that I won .. 8x in the first race.

This was a good start, but, wasn't that unusual, so, gave it little thought.

The markets stayed inefficient in race 2 and 3, and now, I was really confused. I started questioning my software .. But, was winning, 35x, so, although puzzled, boxed on.

I got a phone call after the 4th race, from a colleague, asking how things were going. By this time, I was winning 50x, and explained this to my friend .. At which point, the penny dropped, when he told me, the high winds had blown away the Race Transmission transmitter, and all the country was both without pictures, and a lot of betting information.

I went on, that day, to win 80x, ... 4 times the norm, and I just use this story, as a guide, to what can happen, when normally efficient markets, get distorted.

Back to the cricket.

At the game S.Africa scored a below par ?, 208. It's a bit debateble if its below par, as .. Average score batting 1st there, is 187 ..but, there haven't been that many games there, and last yr, S.Africa scored 300 against Sri Lanka.

I only just managed to get to the game, after a few mishaps in the morning, with the inclement weather, causing delays. I made it .. When, I could just as easily, have decided to bail, and watch India v England, and the Big Bash final on tv.

During the chase, at one stage NZ were 35-3, and priced at about 1.34, which for the non-traders, means NZ would be expected to win 1 game in 3.

For a bizzarre 10 minute period, the NZ price, crashed to 1.25, then 1.16, then 1.10. At 1.10 you are basically saying NZ would win the game, once, in 10, which, I am sure they would be v unhappy about, and was clearly wrong.

I did not know why the market had become so inefficient. I could understand, other cricket was being played .. Even more high profile games, so, many traders would be focused elsewhere, but, this was a massive move.

Twitter is a superb tool, to discover what's happening .. And a few tweets, quickly established TV pictures were being interrupted, at which point, the general power at the cricket ground, failed.

Now, if u are a trader, and, suddenly .. Lets make an analogy :

If bread is normally £1.00 a loaf .. And suddenly, it becomes 40p, what do you do ?

You might want to to buy a great deal, but, you have to both store it, and then sell it, before it goes stale. In the same way, a price for a cricket match, can quickly go, from being huge value, to worthless, so, this is where staking plans, and esoteric discussions of Kelly ( a staking system, based on edge), normally kick in.

Kelly will normally say, bet 2% of your bank. So, lets go back to the bread analogy .. Lets say, u have a bank of £1000 .. and u buy 20 loaves each day at £1, so u can sell them, at £1.10. (I know this only makes u £2 profit .. But, just bear with me).

Now, if the price of Bread goes to 40p, how many loaves should you buy ?

Many people will have different answers, and there is probably no right answer, although I could argue, there are some wrong ones.

Anyway, at the cricket, I had this opportunity/dilemma, and aggressively used it. Many times, I have gone the same route, only to find the bread is full of imperfections, and only fit for the birds. This time, I was able to hold my position long enough, before the market became semi- efficient again, and I could cash the profit.

On many occasions, I have gone the extra mile, only to get a kick in the nuts.

Days like these, make them more palatable.

ODI - Australia v Sri Lanka - Brisbane

Aus in trouble. .. Pre - match, Aus 1.48, with Clarke/Warner/Hughes/Hussey/Wade all scheduled to play.

Aus 26-4 after 10 overs. Interesting stat .. Teams that lose 4 wkts inside 10 overs, go on to make 155 or so, on average.

Sri Lanka favs, 1.45 .. Which looks decent .. Thou Clarke is still in, and he had been the Aus run machine, for the last yr.

Have to back Sri Lanka.

Clarke goes !!

Aus 28-5 .. Maybe they can fit a T20 in after .. This is dismal.

6 down !

30-6 ... Sri Lanka 1.11 after 12 overs

35-7 .. After 15 overs .. Sri Lanka 1.05

Lowest ever total, by Aus v Sri Lanka, is 158 ... Looks like some record books need rewriting.

Kulasekera 5-21 off 8 .. Malinga on, to try get the tail.

Wade goes !

38-8 .. After 17 overs .. Sri Lanka 1.02 .. Looks free money.

zzzz

Fell asleep .. Aus Open Tennis/Poker/Cricket too much .. but woke up, to see Sri Lanka struggled ?, maybe, to 76/6 .. but got the win.

Won a bit.

Momentum One Day Cup Final - Reserve Day - Wanderers

Take 2, and the weather forecast from mid- day, looks decidedly dodgy. They start early at 10 am local, but, thik the rain will hit, as the 2nd team get to bat.

Lions bat 1st, and manage 234.

Levi and Puttick get Cobras off to a flying start, but. Tahir .. Remember him, gets 2 quickl wkts, before the wind gets up, it goes cold, and #megarain arrives, 11 overs in.

20 overs needed for a game .. Not sure, they will get them.

3.15 local ... Banging down. Need to get back by 5.45 for 20 over game.

Power tripped ... Again

Gloomy overhead.

Serious lakes on outfield, which will take 90 mins to clear, IMHO.

This will be close.

3.30 local.

Soppers out .. Will be a while .. Lots fell :

3.50 local .. Some progress .. Some rain in distance ..

4.00 local ... PA bashing out ear splitting music, but, as ever, they say fuck-all to the paying public. They are a fucking disgrace.

4.25 local .. Grd looks ok, but still v wet. Umps doing lots of pointing, which is not a good sign. Rain still on way .. Think this has problems ... #doomed

20 over target is 134 .. Will need 65 from 54, if they get back on.

Momentum One Day Cup Final - Lions v Cobras - Wanderers

A few clouds around the Wanderers, but, should get the majority of the game in.

Lions win the Toss and elect to field

Cobras fav .. 1.83

Cobras get off to a fair start, before losing Puttick and then Levi, and then the rain comes .. cobras 22-2

Cobras 24-3 after 9 overs, and its looking hard batting out there. Rain staying away, for now.

Cobras 64-4 after 16, and heavier stuff arrives .. So, off they go. They could be off for a while.

Some Megarain .. One of the biggest lightening claps ever. U can't beat a Highveld thunder storm ..

Public address said something, I couldn't hear.

Well, in an unusual twist, both the Cape Cobras and title sponsor, Momentum.s official twitter feed, say the game is off, restart tomorrow, but the scoreboard says that's bollox.

It's now stopped, and ground staff clearing up !

I fancy a 25 over game.

Raining again, fairly heavily, and distance looks mixed. Not good.

The power has tripped again, and soppers have cried enough. No one said anything, and I suspect that's it.

Fair play, soppers back for more.

Everyone back .. Removing black covers ...

Umpires chat on outfield .. And appear to say, remove covers.

And slight rain falls again .. I think they want to play, ...

No, all the covers go back ... Sigh.

Covers being removed again .. Definately intention to play, if they can.

Heard the usual from the PA .. As in nothing.

More covers off, cut-off for 20 over game, is in 130 mins .. As I said earlier, I fancy a 25 over game ... And it won't be easy to chase, on a deck like this.Ask Nasser Hussein.

Inspection in 15 mins .. Prob get a 25 over game ..

As the power fails, a little rain falls .. Frustrating ...

As the rain falls, most people have left.

But , I will stay ..

Coffee would be nice ...

Fresh movement in outfield .. 8.10 local .. 90 mins before cutoff.

Maybe ..

Or Maybe not, Finally called-off, at 8.45 local time, and we have to try again tomorrow, with a 10am, start time.

Weather forecast for tomorrow isnt that great .. which is, probably partly why they tried to get a game in today .. hope the rain plays ball.

Stiff on the Lions, who were bang on top .. and now, have to start a new game, with new toss, and maybe new players, from scratch.

Still raining in Jhb .. gonna be a fair amount of cleaning up to do, in the morning .. hope they get a break with the weather, or, it could be another long day.

50 Over Final - Highveld Lions v Cape Cobras - Wanderers

So, the final of the Momemtum One day competition, with the Lions, having topped the table, hosting the final.

From the 10 matches, Lions won 5, but had 3 no results, whilst the Cobras managed 6 wins, with 1 no result. Still, a home final, will be great, as Wanderers is a super place, for a final.

In the log game, played at Cape Town, the Lions won by 19 runs, but, the teams may be a little different this time, as S.African tour players return.

The weather in Johannesburg hasn't been fantastic, and some rain, is forecast, for the middle to late afternoon .. But, expect they will get a 20 over game, at least.
